Eldon city officials are asking residents to be careful what they flush down toilets.
Water and wastewater department crews have recently dedicated a large number of hours, both during the work day and after hours, repairing sewer issues that resulted from the flushing of items not meant to be flushed.
Such occurrences not only pose risks to the city’s infrastructure, but also potentially jeopardize the integrity of homeowners’ infrastructure (plumbing and sewer line).
Items such as flushable wipes, baby wipes, feminine products, clothing, diapers, cooking grease or oils, condoms, cotton-based items, plastics, food or gum should never be flushed down the sewer system.
This list is not exhaustive; if an item cannot readily decompose in water, it should not be flushed.
City officials said residents’ cooperation in adhering to these guidelines will ensure the smooth operation and longevity of the city’s sewer infrastructure, benefitting all residents who rely on it.
