Rueful Ruminations

Something to think about

Posted

Hey there,  welp, it’s another Wednesday and we have survived the Eldon Turkey Festival.

I wore the pedometer Saturday and managed to walk five miles and paid for it Sunday. I have the legs of a hundred and six year old man and I wish he would take them back.

We’ve just finished putting this week’s paper to bed. I was going to write this column immediately after we got done with the press, but the boss wanted a meeting.

He has just returned from convention…anyone who has a boss who goes to convention knows they learn NEW things. The thing he learned more about was AI.

Yes, I know, AI is everywhere. Yes, I know it can be very useful. Yes, I know it can make your job easier…except the people responsible for developing AI have come out and said there is a 10 percent chance AI will destroy us by the end of this decade.

If someone gave you a new drug that they say would do wonderful things for you in the short term, but has a 10 percent chance of killing you in three years, would you take it? Anyway, it’s something to think about.

You will like the Advertiser this week. There lots of things coming up that you might like to attend.

The Eldon FFA alumni will host its annual hog roast and work auction this Saturday with the meal served from 3:30 to 7 p.m. and curbside service will be available. The work auction which features junior and senior FFA members begins at 7 p.m.

Make sure and mark your calendar for Iberia Ranger Days Friday, Oct. 9 and Saturday, Oct. 10. There is a schedule of activities in this week’s paper.

Tuscumbia High School alumni dinner is Saturday, Oct. 10. This is the 70th anniversary of the dinner.

In hard news the Missouri congressional map is maybe, finally, perhaps, for sure is going to be the 2022 congressional map. Be nice to your county clerk. Despite this final judgement, they are still likely traumatized.

They have a hard, sometimes thankless job and were drug through Hades for nothing. Isn’t it nice to know what our tax money is being used for.

Of course there is plenty of Turkey Fest photos in this issue and check out the information about Eldon High School homecoming court. The homecoming parade is this Friday at 2 p.m.

In sports, the Eldon Chamber of Commerce golf classic will take place Oct. 16 at the Eldon Golf and Country Club.

As we go into October, you might be looking for something a little scary for your sports enjoyment. There will be  a zombie fun run Oct. 24 in Eldon. Think a combination of runners, zombies, mud, hay bales and wrecked cars.

Power Overload Training Systems is hosting the event Saturday, Oct. 24. The Day of the Walking Dead 5K Fun will start in the parking lot on the fairgrounds behind McMillen baseball field in Eldon.

I am now at my word count and my fingers are telling me to shut up. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead. The weather looks to be cool and nice.
